For Mike Lockley making the Jacksonville Jaguars could end up costing him $20,000. During the preseason, the linebacker was fined $20,000 for an illegal hit on a New England Patriots receiver. That debt was eventually wiped away when he was cut from the team’s roster. Lockley wouldn’t have had to pay, if he remained out of football. When he was re-signed to the practice squad, the fine was reinstated. $20,000 is a hefty amount of money no matter a player we’re talking about. But as a member of the practice squad, Lockley will make $5,700 per week, far less than the amount he owes the NFL. According to a league spokesman, players like Lockley are put on a payment plan to satisfy their debts. In Lockley’s case, once he gets his first paycheck, he’d pay $2,500 per week for eight weeks to make good with the NFL. Because the amount of the fine is more than 25 percent of his weekly check, Lockley can lodge an appeal. But knowing Rodger Goodell, I wouldn’t hold my breath on getting that fine changed.
The University of Miami confirmed Friday that the university has submitted to the NCAA a list of the players deemed ineligible, in order for the NCAA to initiate the reinstatement process and rule on each individual player by the Sept.5 season opener at Maryland. Coach Al Golden would neither say the amount of ineligible student-athletes nor identify them. It was reported Thursday that eight football players (including quarterback Jacory Harris and linebacker Sean Spence) were declared ineligible by UM. Harris and Spence, and eight of the other 10 players were implicated in a Yahoo! Sports report last week that alleged they received impermissible benefits from Nevin Shapiro. The other players implicated by Yahoo! are defensive tackle Marcus Forston, safeties Ray-Ray Armstrong and Vaughn Telemaque, defensive ends Adewale Ojomo and Olivier Vernon, linebacker Marcus Robinson and receivers Travis Benjamin and Aldarius Johnson. UM president Donna Shalala said earlier this week that 15 student-athletes were being investigated by the NCAA. At least one of them, DeQuan Jones, is a basketball player. This investigation is ongoing and could result in major penalties for the University of Miami, or even termination of the football program.
The Indianapolis Colts have decided to bring in veteran quarterback Kerry Collins as the backup to Peyton Manning. Owner Jim Irsay tweeted Wednesday that “We have agreed to terms with Kerry Collins…more details to come.” Collins (38-years-old) retired in July after 16 seasons in the NFL. He was a free agent after his contract with the Titans expired, but seemed committed to retirement. Collins will serve as the safety net for Manning who is still recovering from neck surgery in May. Irsay had been public about the team’s search for someone else with third-year veteran Curtis Painter, longtime backup Dan Orlovsky and undrafted rookie Mike Hartline the only other quarterbacks on the roster. In 195 career games, Collins had a 55.8 completion percentage and threw for 40,441 yards, 206 touchdowns and 195 interceptions.
The San Francisco 49ers said Monday that they want to put the teams annual preseason matchup against the Oakland Raiders on hold. This coming out after an exhibition game at Candlestick Park in which two fans were shot, one was beaten unconscious, 12 were arrested and dozens ejected. One of the shooting victims was wearing a T-shirt imprinted with a derogatory phrase about the 49ers, according to police. The violence occurred during and after the 49ers’ 17-3 victory Saturday night in their home stadium. Videos taken by fans and posted online shows fights and aggressive behavior in the stands during the game. In the two parking lot shootings, a 24-year-old man was shot multiple times in the stomach and managed to drive himself to a stadium security office for help. He is hospitalized and in critical condition. In another attack, a man in his 20s was shot numerous times but sustained lesser injuries, according to police. About an hour before the shootings, a 26-year-old man was assaulted and beaten unconscious in a bathroom. He was hospitalized in serious condition, police said. The police currently have no suspects in custody and although the shootings were being investigated as separate incidents, they could possibly be related. The Raiders and 49ers began a long-running series in 1967. They played an exhibition game each year through 1993. The series resumed in 1999 and has taken place every year since except 2000. It’s a matchup that has been heated amongst fans and considering the teams close proximity to each other has bragging rights on the line. 49ers CEO Jed York said he will recommend to the NFL that the annual preseason battle between the 49ers and Raiders be put off next year. This could be the death of a long rivalry due to the immaturity of the fans.
Reports are that The University of Miami football program has been implicated in an improper-benefits scandal allegedly involving dozens of players over much of the past decade. A former Miami booster, Nevin Shapiro (currently serving a 20 year prison sentence for masterminding a $930 million Ponzi scheme) told Yahoo Sports that he provide benefits to as much as 72 of the university’s football players and other athletes between 2002 and 2010. In the interview, Shapiro stated he gave money, cars, yacht trips, jewelry, televisions, and other gifts to a number of players. He also claims that then-Miami football and basketball coaches had full knowledge that he was braking NCAA rules. Shapiro said he once paid $10,000 to help secure the commitment of a basketball recruit, and that Frank Haith (then-Miami basketball coach) acknowledged the transaction in a conversation.
The NCAA is investigating the matter, which could lead to significant sanctions for the accomplished program. The University of Miami often refered to as ‘The U’, is known for being a football factory giving us players like: Jim Kelly, Warren Sapp, Sean Taylor, Jim Otto, Michael Irvin, Frank Gore, Ray Lewis, Devin Hester, Ed Reed, and Andre Johnson to name just a few. Miami has won five national titles since their program began in 1926, their last coming in 2001. But the program has struggled in recent years, it has also been found guilty of major violations on five occasions, most recently in 2003. This investigation could lead to the demise of a program that many of us witness dominate and produce hall of fame and pro bowl football players for most of the decade. With schools like USC and Ohio State currently on the hot seat, outsiders are beginning to notice the length at which these schools are willing to go to stay on top. Even if they have to break the rules of the NCAA.
